What Is Run 60 on 60?

Who

Dr. Elizabeth Miller, beloved Savannah resident and ophthalmic surgeon for over 30 years, has taken on a huge personal challenge. Her own “special event”, a RUN to raise awareness of and money for The Humane Society for Greater Savannah and THE CAUSE and community near and dear to her heart!

What Cause

Funds raised by Dr. Miller’s RUN will go toward the establishment of a Community Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic. Without reduced-cost alternatives, many caring and otherwise responsible pet owners cannot afford to have their pets sterilized. Unfortunately, these pets contribute to the troubling and costly pet over-population dilemma. A low-cost clinic will directly impact this cause of pet over-population.

When

On October 1, 2010, her 60th birthday, Dr. Miller will run 60 miles. She will start at 5 AM and spend the entire day – at least 12 hours of it – running in support of THE CAUSE.

Where

Dr. Miller will begin her trek in The Landings on a route that will take her to downtown Savannah, out to Tybee and then back to the Humane Society on Sallie Mood Drive at approximately 6 PM. Upon her arrival there, she will be met by fans, friends, supporters and sponsors for a well-deserved celebration and joyous birthday party!

Why Care

Dr. Miller has had a deep passion for animals her entire life. She devotes much of her free time to the Humane Society both as a Board Member and volunteer dog walker. She shares, with the entire animal welfare community, an acute awareness that pet over-population is a critical problem that results in distressing euthanasia rates in Greater Savannah and throughout the nation.

DISTURBING FACTS:

  • A female cat and her offspring are capable of producing 420,000 cats in 7 years.
  • A female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in 6 years.
  • More than 4 million animals are euthanized in shelters annually:
  • Millions more are abandoned to suffer with illness or injury before dying.
  • More animals die as a result of euthanasia than all other diseases combined.

The CURE for euthanasia is spaying and neutering!
